Yet, this surge also unveiled vulnerabilities within the subscription model, leading to a significant downturn in 2022.

How significant? According to the 2022 SaaS Benchmarks Report by OpenView, in April 2022, fast-growing SaaS companies’ valuations dropped from 46 times their last 12 months (LTM) revenue to being valued at just 11 times their LTM revenue. The drop in valuation suggests a shift in market sentiment, with investors becoming less optimistic about the future growth prospects of these companies or potentially reevaluating the sustainability of their business models.

Despite the setbacks, Cespedes and Jacco van der Kooij say the subscription model still is very much alive. “In fact, informed by an understanding of the model’s core dynamics and the lessons of the SaaS crash, its best days are ahead,” they write. However, to navigate the evolving landscape, SaaS companies must shift their approach. Emphasizing quality over quantity in lead generation, understanding the intricacies of customer success versus service, and prioritizing sustainable growth over scalable expansion are pivotal principles for steering the course toward enduring success in the subscription realm.
